Bollywood – The Show Must Go On! Anupama Chopra

2020.09.23 17:25 NewsPlant Bollywood – The Show Must Go On! Anupama Chopra

Before I fell in love with Hindi films, I fell in love with the Hindi film industry. In 1989, straight out of college, I got a job with the now-defunct Movie magazine. But I wasn’t deeply interested in the movies. I lived in South Bombay (as it was known then). Even though my mother Kamna Chandra wrote Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog (1982) and Yash Chopra’s Chandni (1989), we didn’t watch too many Hindi films. We preferred the infinitely cooler experience of Hollywood in the rarefied setting of theatres like Metro and Sterling. The magazine job was supposed to be a diversion, a stop-gap until I figured out what I really wanted to do. In a few months, I understood that I had found my calling.
I fell in love hard, not so much with the artistry of Hindi film but with the intoxication of the film industry. It was gaudy and chaotic but also instantly seductive. The personalities were outsized. The environment was so informal and porous that on the pretext of an interview, you could spend hours hanging out with stars. The proximity to fame was heady. It was like having front-row seats to a colourful, constantly dazzling Broadway show. There was action in every corner of the stage.
My love for the industry evolved into a passion for film, which has defined most of my adult life. My appetite grew to encompass movies of every genre, language, shape and size. Meanwhile, the industry metamorphosed into Bollywood. It no longer functioned like the Wild West. The bazaar style-working was slowly replaced by studios, multiplexes and publicly traded companies. Bound scripts, contracts, agents, minders, publicists, entourages became part of the landscape. What was once considered, literally and metaphorically, an ‘andhere ka dhanda,’ became legitimate.
Over the last 25 years, Bollywood has attained, what New York University anthropologist Dr. Tejaswini Ganti, calls, cultural legitimacy. Which means an acceptance from sectors of society that haven’t been their traditional audience base. The moniker might be contentious but there is little doubt that Bollywood is the subcontinent’s most distinctive cultural marker. No matter where I travel, when I say that I’m from India, the response is invariably, “Aah…Bollywood.” In 2013, I attended the Marrakech International Film Festival. When I told my hair stylist that I’m Indian, he started singing, “Tujhe dekha to yeh jana sanam…” He, like most of the country, was besotted with Shah Rukh Khan. Bollywood, once seen as kitschy, third-world cinema, slowly came to be recognized as a vibrant and profoundly popular art form.
But Bollywood has never just been a style of filmmaking. It’s a culture and a religion. Literally – fans have built temples for actors like Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan. Over the years, Hindi films have taught us how to love, what to wear, how to style our hair. They have shaped our dreams and aspirations and gifted us with boundless pleasure. I experience it each time I see the beauteous Madhubala as Anarkali defying a thunderous emperor as she sings ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’ in Mughal-e-Azam. Or when Veeru sways drunkenly from the water tank in Sholay. Or when Raj and Simran reunite in that field in Punjab to the strains of ‘Tujhe Dekha To’. Or when Bhuvan hits that winning six in Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. Or when Kabir Khan’s rakshason ki sena lifts the women’s hockey World Cup in Chak De! India. Or when Poo pouts in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and declares: Tell me how it was! I don’t know about you but my life would be infinitely less magical and less joyous without Hindi films.
I say this as a person whose profession it is to criticize. For almost thirty years now, I have railed against its shortcomings – both in the movies and the business. There are raging problems that need fixing, especially in the industry. Everything Bollywood has been accused of in the last few months – discrimination, drugs, favouritism, nepotism, short-sightedness, cowardice, greed, vanity, arrogance – could be true. As it is for the rest of the country and every other ecosystem – business, sports, politics, tech. The Hindi film industry is not a hotbed of sin, polluting an otherwise pristine nation.
But since the tragic demise of Sushant Singh Rajput, Bollywood has come under siege. The attack has been unstinting, slanderous and specious. I’ve seen the industry go through terrible times – the mafia years in the late 90s and early 2000s were especially hard. But this current viciousness and hate, furthered by the media, social media and paid trolls, is new and bewildering. The high-decibel narrative portrays the film industry like the decadent Roman Empire, in the last days before its collapse.
It would be comical if it weren’t so sad. This is an industry built on sweat and ambition, tears and dreams. According to the Deloitte-MPA Report, ‘Economic Impact of the Film, Television and Online Video Services Industry in India,’ released in May, film and allied industries like television and streaming, make a contribution of 349,000 crore (direct and indirect) to the economy and employ approximately 26.6 lakh people (direct and indirect). And this does not include, as Nitin Tej Ahuja, CEO of the Producers Guild of India, points out, “the income of the Gwalior barber peddling Kartik Aaryan haircuts, the Jalandhar choreographer training bridesmaids to perform Didi Tera Devar Deewana or the Chandni Chowk tailor selling Simran lehengas.”
Hindi cinema permeates every aspect of our lives. And yet, the artists who create this cinema are being assaulted in ways that are hideous and heartbreaking. The men and women who have entertained us for decades have become collateral damage in a political war being waged by opportunists. The film industry has become a smoke screen, being used to obfuscate. It’s graceless and dangerous and sadly, there seems to be no end in sight.
But the next time you pronounce judgement or click, in gleeful anticipation, on an article that claims to reveal sensational details about the filth in the film industry, remember that their art has nourished your life. This is a business teeming with bright, hardworking, talented people. And the show will go on. As it always does.

2020.09.20 17:40 iamcheese4 Not too sure which colour to paint my S15. Bonus pics of my car in thread

Hey I’m looking to respray my S15 a brown colour soon and I stumbled upon this colour.
https://youtu.be/dggEazkT30g In the video it shows the colour very nicely and I love the richness of the brown but looking at many other photos the colour mostly looks black unless there’s a good light source I mean I do like black S15s but I’m not sure if thats what I want personally.
My other choice is BMW Marrakech brown which is really nice but I don’t think it is as nice as Phantom Brown at its best but in my opinion looks good all round most light conditions. An example of an S14 with this colour here. https://www.instagram.com/p/CFJpL4Pjhkg/?igshid=1rb6bdrvkc34l
And pics of how my car is currently looking LOL https://imgur.com/a/idJq4U9

2020.09.08 15:28 902jess Does this make me a shitty person?

So I had booked some travel back in March for next March thinking that this whole pandemic thing would be cleared up and things would be back to normal by 2021. I don’t normally book so far in advance but I wanted something to look forward to, and had so much time on my hands to plan/dream. I was going to Morocco and Turkey. Last week I made the decision to cancel the trip because I’m not sure I want to be wearing masks and being on group buses etc just yet. The tour companies were great, refunding all but the deposit, and holding that for future travel. I had one hostel return in full. I will be taking the trip when things return a little bit more normal/comfortable for group travel. But, I had booked one night in a hostel near the airport in Marrakech on Agoda and I thought it was cancellable but I guess I was wrong. I know the right thing to do is cancel anyway and just take the $30 loss. But part of me thinks it’s shitty of them to not offer a cancellation this far in advance and during all this that I want to just no show it so they can’t rebook and earn double. Does that make me a shitty person? It not being a cancellable booking is technically my error :

2020.09.03 14:22 Beegrurealty TRENDS IN THE WORLD MARKET VS COVID-19 BATTLE

TRENDS IN THE WORLD MARKET VS COVID-19 BATTLE
Finally, some clear trends are emerging as the disturbances caused by the coronavirus pandemic expand, the nation’s struggling to control the situation and residents put under Work from Home (WFH) regime. Research published by Moody’s Investor Service hinted at the risk exposure of various sectors, real estate companies managed to pass cheap on this list with only 5% of the rated project and infrastructure companies in Asia Pacific region placed in the high-risk bracket.
Low-risk exposure
About 67 per cent infrastructure companies in the Asia Pacific are enjoying a relatively low exposure to the COVID disruptions due to the following reasons
  • Nature of services
  • Cashflows
  • Value for money
Government initiatives, policies and rules supplemented to the comfortable position of real estate.
Property beats other investments over 25 years.
A look back over the last 25 years demonstrates how the expression “safe as houses” also rings true during considerable uncertainty.
Between the period of 1995-2020, real estate registered an increase of 458%, making it the best performing investment asset class.
Why the stress on “uncertainty”?
Humans are hard-wired to seek comfort and certainty. Any hints of the foggy situation and see humans lose their cool. A home you own in the times of pandemic provides a mental relief. Even if everything goes south, at least you have a roof on your head.
Rise of the super-rich
The US dominates world market with 2,40,575 Ultra High Net Worth Individual (UHNWIs), Asia’s five-year trends hinting a double-digit growth against North America’s projected rate.
India tops the charts with an expected +73%, China +58%, and Indonesia +57% rate.
  • HNWI or High Net Worth Individual is a wealthy person, particularly one with investable assets over $1 million.
  • Wellness as a measure of national performance, 80% of UHNWIs are dedicating more time and money into their wellbeing.
Property Hotspots
40 cities were shortlisted by Knight Frank’s team of residential property experts, identifying the prime property hotspots for 2020. Sentosa in Singapore, Amizmiz in Marrakech and Maida Vale in London being the most desirable destinations for realtors and consumers alike.
Low-risk exposure to a hinted rise in the super-rich and Singapore coming out as the go-to destination for reality in 2020. We can say the market is somewhere showing clear trends. The trust Indian consumers bestow on real estate is working as a strong catalyst with real estate transactions flowing still!
Good days are ahead!

2020.08.29 17:45 Cuckooaskukkutasana 27M Sharing My Modest Capsule Fragrance Wardrobe

Link to Photo
It feels a bit strange to me to be sharing this actually because this has always felt so personal to me and I have never actually shared it with anyone in person! Does anyone else feel that way?
I tend to gravitate towards heavier unisex woody floriental notes and leather and dark gourmand. I'm not a collector I just love all of these, but mostly the way they make me feel and the emotions and memories that they evoke.
I do own a lot of decants and samples and the ones here are just about 1/4 of them all and the rest tucking away somewhere. I like to use them to train and educate my nose and expand my boundaries further. A simple exercise I like to do is when I receive new decants or sample vials, I would take a few and sit down and spray one by one on a test strip without reading anything or remember the information. I'd write down with as much details of notes or accords or what it reminds me of or really anything that comes to mind. I highly encourage this exercise if you want to test your nose! A major part of my work is coffee tasting, so this exercise came about quite expectedly.
Tom Ford Private Line DNA really resonate with me and it all just clicked, so I'm heavily biased towards that line as you'll see.
I love them all equally so not based on ranking + short reviews:
If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

2020.08.08 23:12 TheBluestBunny Looking for friends who like ESO and Elder Scrolls!

Hello! I’m 24f and I’m looking for anyone 18+ to be friends with (just friends!) I recently got into ESO and have loved Elder Scrolls for years, unfortunately none of my friends do so I don’t really have anyone to play with or talk about ES lore with. I love lots of other video games, and have others on the PS4 and switch, but I ESO on pc. I have a dischord, too!
I’m happily married, and also really enjoy music, makeup related things, as well as tabletop games and D&D. I’m having a hard time explaining who I am as a person, but I like to think I can be really funny, I love pirate jokes and making people laugh, bad puns, and funny shows. I enjoy anime (doesn’t everyone?) and, most importantly, I AM TERRIBLE AT VIDEO GAMES. I love them so much, but I’m so, so terrible. I do however, know how to have a good time and enjoy myself. Feel free to message me! I really like Marrakech and Bunny Kingdom, so if you know what those are that would also be cool! I don’t have anything to shill or whatever I just want people to play with and talk to.

2020.08.04 15:04 Quartzzz922 Met Moroccan man on Tinder & need advice

Hello! I am a woman (29 y/o) from the U.S. and matched on Tinder with a man (30 y/o) from El Kelaa des Sraghna who now lives in Marrakech. We matched a few months ago when Tinder was offering the “passport” feature (normally something you pay for) for free during quarantine. I was not using that feature but we was. I saw he was 3,000+ miles away but he seemed cute and interesting, so I figured why not? I enjoy talking with people from different cultural backgrounds. There’s always something new to learn.
We talked quite a bit about hobbies and interests and moved to chatting on Whats App about a month ago. We’ve FaceTimed once, but haven’t recently as he went and stayed with his parents for a while and he said he doesn’t have much privacy. (He said he has told his mom about me) He mentioned him and his brothers own a few properties they use for air bnbs, but business has been bad due to covid, and he also has a freelance video editing job.
I’ve been pretty realistic about the situation not really thinking it would go anywhere because we live in different countries. There have been times where I thought to myself, “why am I spending time on this guy? What am I doing?” I think it’s because I’m lonely and tired of meeting guys on dating apps who just want me for sex. It’s refreshing to talk to someone who is interested in getting to know me as a person.
A month ago he started saying he loved me and wants to marry and have children with me. I asked him straight up if he just wants a green card and he said no, marrying for money or benefits isn’t good. He said Marriage is one of the biggest decisions and he can’t waste his life with someone he didn’t love. He shared he was asked by a Russian woman working in Morocco if he would marry her so she could stay in the country, and he said no. I know that’s not the same as an American woman asking him to marry, but made me feel a little more at ease.
However I still have doubts. I’m not someone who rushes into things, especially love. It’s weird for someone to tell you they love you and want a life with you before you actually met in person. Especially after only talking for 3 months. I explained why I don’t say “I love you” back. He understands. I’m concerned he isn’t being genuine and ultimately does want a green card, mainly because he’s professing his love so soon. Would he give this much energy if I was a Moroccan woman? I’m not sure.
Are green card marriages via internet dating a common scam in Morocco? How can I protect myself? Am I being unfair to him by being suspicious? Should I move on and cut off contact? I would love advice from people who live in the country.
TL;DR - American woman met a Moroccan man on Tinder and isn’t sure if he is using her to eventually get a green card

2020.07.26 16:26 Great-Savings Tamazigh in Morocco

which city would be concerned by a generalization of teaching in Tamazight in Morocco? I know that cities like Agadir (my city) Ait melloul, Taroudant, Tiznit, Essaouira, Tinghir, Khenifra, Sefrou, Khemissete, Azrou, Ifran, Hoceima, Nador and their provinces But what about mixed cities like Beni Mellal, Meknes, Gercif or Taourirt or even Marrakech? Personally, I think we should focus on predominantly Amazigh cities, but it would be interesting to offer an option for mixed cities? I think that the Amazigh associations of Morocco must go to the essential, encourage for the moment the Latin alphabet (or Arabic but there is risk of confusion), the bringing together of the dialects (it will take an Amazigh Senjha language which includes the souss and the atlas and a Zenete version which includes the rif and certain other regions). But unfortunately there is no will of the Moroccan state.m: /

2020.06.02 11:37 yassinto “About to be” engaged to a Marrakechia(I’m a Dutch moroccan)

Salam ou alaikom wled el bled. I am a 28 year old casawi born and raised in the netherlands. I visit Morocco several times a year and I speak the language fairly good, not perfect walakin kan selek. So I can make myself heard and understand nearly everything. A conversation is not a problem so to speak. I don’t know if it’s important but I tought I mention it anyways. Also I have been raised quite modern but also with Islam. Most things in a grey area my parenrs always gave me a choice. Go Do your thing but remember you’re a Muslim and mat3iyekch. I consider myself as a maghrebi 1000/1000.
I have met the most beautiful, fun, sweet girl I could imagine in marrakech a year ago. This was at the McDonald’s in gueliz where she was with her friends. Some romantic movie type meeting occurred and we exchanged numbers. We’ve spend some time in a group setting. Her friends (4girls) and my friends (2 guys) and some time alone. In the group setting she was super cool Rn fun, during alone time she was very shy. Understandable. We’ve spend some more time and Really hit it of while also keeping things halal(No touching and stuff).
She came off as a modern girl with the values of Islam. Also she didn’t go clubbing or drink or whatever. Her parents let her go outside but just like me, mat3iyekch. And so she doesn’t 3iyek.
After some time I went back to her and we spend another week or week and a half in November. Again all is good.
When I’m in the netherlands we talk a lot via WhatsApp and Instagram and do videocalls every other day. Her brother, sister and mother know about me and her mom will tell her dad when I decide to make my dad call for the engagement.
So far I have absolutely nothing to complain. I love her, she’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen and her personality is even better. So it’s fair to say I have not one doubt about her.
Also, important to say, I’ve told her I want to live in Morocco and she was oké with it. She told me No Matter were we live, jts oké as long as were together. Because I’ve been warned about scams a gazillion times and it happened a lot to people from the Netherlands. My father is actually one of those scammers. My uncle married one but he found out pretty early and tricked her back to Morocco. Anyway my family has had some issues like this. But it was a different time. This was in the 80/90ies. And we I see it Morocco has changed a lot since then.
Ive told my parents and my brother about her but they aren’t really pleased with it and raised several questions and told me of how good moroccan woman can be in acting. On the other hand, I have dated a lot, and I mean A LOT, since it’s super easy in the Netherlands and I can honestly say I am not ugly. I say this to show(?) Have my fair share of experience with woman. And within the girls I’ve dated there were a lot of different types. Ie dutch, turks, moroccans, balkan, tall, short, golddiggers! So I guess it’s safe to say I can distinguish love and usage.
Are there any additional tips or stuff I need to look out for. I’ve also told her I’m not a rich man. I drive a fairly new ford but it’s not a Mercedes for instance. She didn’t care. My parents keep telling me to look out but I have no idea for what since I’m already convinced she’s in it for me not something else. I may be wrong but Allah Ou 3lem. If there are any additional questions feel free to ask since I’m fairly sure I’ve missed important stuff.
So in summary tl;dr
Dutch moroccan planning to marry a girl from marrakech.
-what to look out for? -what does an average wedding cost in Morocco (not too big not too small, family and close friends) -Whats the going rate for the weddingtreasure(dont know What its called in English or arabic, it’s what you give for the girl) In my family in NL the girls get 3000 the guys on average give between 1000/5000 (euros) and there are people who give/demand crazy amounts ofcourse.
Many thanks in advance
Edit: there is really no reason to question her. Ive had some close people filling my head with stuff but it was/is uncalled for. Thanks anyways. Still want to know what the average wedding will cost. thanks in advance!

2020.04.11 01:00 Spokodude Advice on how not to get scammed when requesting mirror service

Hi everyone. I have been fortunate enough to acquire a mirror in delirium SC and I plan on asking someone to mirror their CA bow for me. I’ve never actually asked someone for mirror service before, so this post is me asking the community for advice on how to not get scammed out of my hard earned currency. The total cost to mirror is the mirror plus 40 ex fee.
I have no reason to believe the person doing the mirroring will scam me, but they only have 1 vouch in their forum thread, and I don’t exactly feel comfortable handing over a mirror plus 40 ex to a stranger.
I know some people ask a popular streamer to be the middle man (which is what I’m personally hoping can be arranged), but are there any other alternative ways to ensure I don’t get scammed?
Thanks!
PS the bow I plan to mirror is a Marrakech bow for my CA build: +1 str gems / +1 dex gems / +1 socketed gems / +2 bow gems / 40% chaos dot multi / 35% dot multi

(M)y completed collection - with brief reviews and breakdowns
I have finally completed my collection! I am comfortable with saying that I am done with acquiring fragrances now, especially because since January I have only bought 3 bottles, and am no longer looking for new fragrances.
Here's a photo of my collection. I've edited it like crazy just to increase visibility, otherwise it's too dark to see anything other than what was at the front. I'm only including full bottles here, so no decants or samples.
The perfumes:
I've left several perfumes out; two Moroccan ones that don't exist outside of a dodgy Facebook page, two from a local clone house, and one perfume from a Singaporean house called Sfir Aromatics that specialize in custom perfumes, but other than these, this is my entire collection.
If you've read all the way to the end, thank you and I hope you've enjoyed reading about my collection. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them all :)

2020.03.23 15:27 WalkingEars Trip Report: January 2020 in Morocco

I was supposed to be taking a four-month trip around the world beginning in January and ending in May. I'm back in the US early thanks to covid19, and wanted to look back fondly on the part of the trip that wasn't screwed up by the outbreak, and share it with a subreddit that helped motivate me to make the trip happen.
About Me - 29m, from the US. I finished grad school in December 2019 and wanted to take some time off and fly around the world, beginning with a month spent in Morocco. My only prior solo travel experiences had been short weekend trips within the US (though I've traveled outside the US on non-solo trips before). As a male, I'll add the disclaimer that I can only speak to my own experiences in Morocco and can't comment on how these destinations would've been for a solo female traveler.
Itinerary
  1. Marrakech
  2. Imlil
  3. Ait Benhaddou
  4. Agdz (with a day trip, on foot, to Tamnougalt)
  5. Nkob
  6. Merzouga/Erg Chebbi (with short day trip to Rissani)
  7. Meknes (with day trip to Volobulis/Moulay Idriss)
  8. Chefchaouen (with day trips to Akchour Falls and Tetouan)
  9. Fez
  10. Asilah
  11. Back to Marrakech
Budget
I was trying to stay under $125 per day. The vast majority of the time I was under this and I came out under budget for the month. On the days I went over budget, it was because of transportation - a few times, I booked private drivers (in the early part of the trip I did this because I hadn't figured out how to use grand taxis properly yet, and I also did this to get from Merzouga to Meknes because the bus would've gotten me to Meknes at 3am, I didn't want to do that).
What went well
What didn't go well
What I would do differently
So, I think that's everything. I loved it, and while I'm sad that the virus kept me from flying around the world like I planned, I'm grateful to have had one month of travel completely undisrupted by the outbreak. Feel free to ask questions, and I hope you enjoyed reading about this trip.

2020.02.25 15:03 TessaBissolli Meandering in Red's mind, or "Red, in his own words". Part 4: His worldview

Red actually has said a lot about himself, through six and a half seasons.
He’s a capitalist not a communist: I happen to believe in capitalism. I like money. I like the lifestyle it affords me. I like the things that happen when you give it away.
Loves treasure hunts, puzzles and mysteries
Borakove, I hate sarcasm, and I love puzzles.
It's all just pieces of a much larger puzzle, and until all the pieces are laying in front of you, it won't go together.
Haskell's quite a puzzle man. Spends his days combing through thousands of pages of redacted government documents, comparing them to defense-authorization reports, executive orders. He's found a way to read between the lines. I wouldn't have the patience.
Steinhil's smart. He knew I'd be overconfident after figuring out the hospital wasn't real. that I'd think I'd solved the puzzle when I'd only gotten one piece. He knew I wouldn't see his fingerprints all over the escape.
Relax. Have a drink. Help me finish this infuriating puzzle.
I haven't felt this giddy since Herbie Hunnicutt and I pooled our box tops and sent away for the decoder ring and periscope. Why is that? What is this feeling? ... Everyone loves hidden treasures Yamashits Gold, the Oak Island Money Pit. Hell, even DB Cooper, which was more of a mystery and less of a treasure hunt, really... Mystery? You know why? Robert Louis Stevenson. Edgar Allan Poe."The Gold Bug." Oh, what a story. It has everything a delirious search for treasure, the descent into madness, along with ciphers and bugs, a skull nailed to a tree. What a yarn.
I've imagined robbing the Mint of the money they make, but never of a fortune they don't even know they have. But this is a treasure hunt.
Waste of time? We've been decrypting legends. Chasing pirates. Hunting hidden treasure.
But the answer to complex things is always the easiest one: When confronting complex equations, the simplest solution is most often the correct one.
There is a very good scene to study the way he obscures his motivations to people does not know well. It comes in 1.04 when Lorca hired The Stewmaker to kill Liz painfully:
LORCA: You have a problem with me disposing of this bitch? Agent Keen will soon disappear. That is the price for taking everything I have.
RED: See, that’s the problem right there. You let your emotions get the best of you, which is how people wind up in jail, Hector. Stupid people. I need the name and location of the man holding Elizabeth Keen.
LORCA: Are you sure it is not you who’s acting on emotion? It sounds personal.
RED: You got me. It is personal. I want your man. So let me spell it out for you. You get away. Agent Ressler here saves Agent Keen. He looks good. And everyone feels better about themselves. I need a name. Now.
It was personal because he was desperate to save Liz, but he DID want the Stewmaker, because he needed to know the story of the photo. That is how he knew the girl was alive. The truth sells it, and Ressler provided the perfect motivation. But it is his bluff with Lorca that clinches it: Then good luck to you, Mr. Lorca**.**
He finds cops are linear, following protocols, and that makes them useful.
The best example of how he uses the FBI comes in 2.17, when Red admits clearly to Liz: This was always about Roger Hobbs. I used the FBI to create a problem for Roger. I needed the man to be in my debt, and now he is.
The FBI works for me now.
God, are you FBI.
You’re thinking like a cop. Cops are so objective. They’re obligated to protocols. Make it personal
You’re so linear. The FBI and the police– the way they teach you to think never ceases to amaze me.
You FBI are such blunt instruments
You g-men are top shelf. Let me guess. Ressler slipped on a banana peel?
Perhaps this is an opportunity to let our new friends at the FBI carry the water.
A small, select group of agents are in my employ.
That van. It was there when we arrived, and it’s still there. That is the FBI. With all the scans and wands and this elevator you’ve built that goes down to middle earth, and you don’t even bother to sweep the street around your building?
and we are reminded of in this scene in season 7:
RED: I'm here as something of a guardian angel, Bhavish. It's come to my attention that you're the target of an FBI investigation. See the rather furtive ginger behind you? He's FBI. Or if he isn't, he certainly looks like he's FBI. Same with the woman by the fence over there.
RATNA: And why are you telling me all this?
RED: Because there's something I want you to tell me, just as soon as I get you the hell out of here. See the gentleman behind me, by the black Mercedes? He's your escape plan.
PARK: You tipped Ratna off to an FBI investigation you initiated!
RED: Yes, to put him in my debt by setting him free.
Being in Red's debt is not a good place to be:
DR. SHAW: You're Raymond Reddington. RED: And you're in my debt, which can be a complicated place to be.
FRANKIE: Where are we going? And why do I have to go with you? RED: Because you remain in my debt.
RED TO COOPER: Tom Connolly's been leaking information to the Cabal about everything that goes on in this place ever since he walked through that door and offered to save your life. You want to wipe that debt clean? Keep your eyes open and your mouth shut.
That shouldn't be hard, Bill. You betrayed me. You sold me an asset and then allowed him to turn when Berlin offered you twice as much. You're in debt to me. Recognize this rather fortuitous opportunity for you to begin to make things even.
And I told you I'm not willing to take no for an answer. Set the meeting, and I'll consider your debt from Caracas as paid in full.
I'm here to call in your chit.
Don't underestimate yourself, Robert. One way or another, I'm confident Kirk will come. I'll have his head, and you'll end up in the Oval Office, where you can pay off your debt to me with a full pardon.... Not me. Elizabeth Keen.
COOPER ABOUT MOSADEK: I've seen Mosadek's intel file. He helped the agency kill or capture several high-value targets. Besides, you didn't let him go. You put him in Reddington's debt a place I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
But he does not presume on his people being indebted to him, he knows is economics, and he knows the difference between that and friendship and love: Most of my associates are under the impression that once I've granted them a favor, they're indebted to me for life. But it's a false assumption. They're indebted to me because I make them a lot of money. They're loyal to me because I've earned it. It's good business. But at the end of the day, it's just business.
Hates shapeshifters who pretend to be good: She preyed on the weak and the innocent while dressed in the wings of a savior. I detested everything about her.
Believes in two sided relationships
Oh, what do you want? RED: I meant what I said before about our relationship being symbiotic. I help you, you help me. We help each other.
Yes, the agreement is for me to bring cases to you. It doesn't work the other way around. I'm not your consultant. I have no interest in cases that I have no interest in. Personally, I think my proposal was incredibly fair. You have got to give to get, Harold. You're asking me to go beyond the terms of our agreement. If you want me to help you with this case, I will, but I need something extra to sweeten the deal.
How about a trade? You tell me and I’ll tell you. Tell me about the scar on your palm
If I tell you, you have to give me something in return.
And what do I get in return?
How about a trade?
We're in a symbiotic relationship.
I was planning on forcing the issue. Now I can give to get. You do what I want, I'll make sure you get your son back.
You see, Yaabari, you didn't actually find me. I found you. And while your prepubescent ruffians may not know it, they brought me here to strike a deal that could benefit all of us.
Agent Keen, in this world, there are no sides, only players.
Red always keeps things to himself: Let me put your mind at ease. I’m never telling you everything.
Knows he is not perfect . You’ve killed two people. RED: I’m not perfect, but acknowledges the value of fear: I’ve always found fear to be my most valuable sense
He does have a bit of craziness:
TROLL FARMER: You’re crazy, old man. RED: You have no idea.
THE DIRECTOR: You’re insane. RED: I wouldn’t know.
Loves animals:
I simply cannot fathom the journey, the moral detours necessary to change a man who cherished all creatures great and small into one who profits from their slaughter.
I’m not a monster. You really think I’d harm a dog?
Robert, if you're lying, I will shatter your serenity by burning your home, drowning your cat, and cutting off your big toes. VESCO: You wouldn't dare drown my cat. RED: Maybe not. But I will take the toes.
Has a distrust of the CIA
You look like the CIA…. attractive but treacherous.
The CIA did what the CIA does. I expected as much, which is why Agent Burke and the other hostages were moved from that compound. The question is why on earth you would share the compound's location with the very people I advised you not to trust.
From what I hear, the good Father Nabiyev is an agent of the CIA. That's a crime, Agent Keen. Going back to the Cold War, the CIA has a long and controversial history of using religious figures as spies in violation of executive orders, internal CIA policy, and promises made by every president since Ford... You have more than just a blacklister to worry about this time. The CIA will do whatever it takes to keep this quiet.
Started despising cops like Ressler but had come to somewhat admire them
I certainly don’t want your intelligence, Agent Ressler. I’m quite happy with my own.
Then you’ll just have to find another criminal to talk to Elizabeth Keen and make fun of Agent Ressler.
Donald, never let it be said that I valued a Zegna Venticinque tie over a human life, even yours.
Donald! Donald! Feeling any wittier yet? Any strange cravings for beluga caviar or Marcel Proust?
I shouldn’t have to remind you I did not offer my services so that I could help you round up your run-of-the-mill drug lord or what have you. You all seem to be doing a perfectly mediocre job of that on your own. I’m after the big game, Lizzy, the ones that matter.
It's not a trade or a bribe or an offer of payment in kind to entice you to look away. I admire your probity too much for that.
Ressler is a law-enforcement robot. The FBI winds him up.
You know, Donald, before I turned myself in to the FBI, I held people like you in extremely low regard... But I've found your determination to do the right thing, your genuine commitment to the thin blue line that separates order and innocence from the likes of me to be quite admirable.
Sins should be buried like the dead. Not that they may be forgotten, but that we may remember them and find our way forward nonetheless. I hope this will help you do just that. Besides, after today, I'd have no reason to think you'd respond to threats, and blackmail is such a nasty business, particularly among friends, don't you think?
He is a believer in thinking rather than reacting or using force
We're not gonna be able to fight our way out of this, Lizzy. We're gonna have to think our way out.
that’s the problem right there. You let your emotions get the best of you, which is how people wind up in jail, Hector. Stupid people.
Why take time to think when it’s so much easier to shoot?
There you go again, Anslo, using a pistol in place of a brain.
For once in your life, stop and think.
His favorite advice is to take a breath
I need you to tell me what Zamani said. In the house what did he say, what did you see? No. What did you see? Take a breath, Lizzy.
Lizzy, listen to me. Take a breath. You can do this.
Take a breath, agent Ressler. You think I'm gonna fly all the way to Montreal for the cheese cart?
Ruslan... Take a breath. I told you to move the hostages. You did. Your assets are intact.
Slow down, Smokey. Take a breath.
Harold, sit. Take a breath. Smoke a cigar. Read some "Calvin and Hobbes." Whatever you do to relax, do it before you have an aneurysm
Okay, take a breath. Let's celebrate ... Earlier today, you two were both on your way to trial, to prison, and now, thanks to us, you're both free. Free to greet opportunity knocking at your door.
Red prefers not to trust technology but human intelligence, and is a techno-moron by his own admittance:
I don’t have e-mail or a phone or an address. I prefer to handle my business face-to-face.
I don’t even have a phone. I insist on delivering all of my messages in person.
Phones are so impersonal. Why don’t we meet for show and tell in 30 minutes
Your country has become a nation of eavesdroppers– frequency domains, triangulation, satellites, crypto-whatever. You’ve forgotten that what matters most is human intelligence– alliances, relationships, seductio
Don’t you miss the good old days with the pay phones and the brush passes?
It is an absolute mystery to me how these gadgets work the Dick Tracey phones, these blueteeth connections. Quite frankly, I miss the rotary phone. Except for that zero. Watching that zero crawl back.
Her name's Laurence Dechambou. She's ex-French intelligence. She now makes a handsome living selling secrets, mostly of a technological nature. I really don't understand any of it.
It's a three-day rental Dembe found through some online site. Something b-n-b? Are you familiar with such a thing?
RED: Who turned down Harvard a year ago, and a job at Face whatever.... Look, I'm a technological moron. I just don't get it, which is why I surround myself with people who do.
He believes that things must be done well or not at all
We’ll meet Wujing. You’ll decode the message and transmit it to your team…. both you and the Chinese will know the name of the agent for which the message was intended, and the race begins. We try to save him. The Chinese try to kill him….. The Chinese may not know what the message is, but they certainly know what it isn’t. We do it for real, or we don’t do it at all.
Keeping up appearances. I’m a criminal. The minute I stop being one, I become quite useless to you
Has a thing for ironies
Life is full of lovely little ironies.
What becomes of you and General Ludd once you board that plane is none of my concern though it is worth noting that a true luddite would burn the plane rather than fly in it. But whatever. Your irony.
I normally carried Hydra-Shok hollow points. I was trying out a new series of center-fire wadcutters that week. It’s probably the only thing that saved your life, really. Me switching ammo. Think about that little irony now every time you randomly find your reflection or are reminded of that unfortunate thing I’ve done to your face.
Oh, well, as much as I admire the police for their wonderful sense of irony, I’m afraid they’ve got this one wrong.
You dig up a plague, hatch a plan to spread it around the world, but before you do, you synthesize a cure. For yourself and your Eve. Ironic, isn’t it. If you were half as dedicated to your cause as Yevgeny was, there would be no vaccine, I wouldn’t be here, and you and Pepper would be free to romp like bunnies until the convulsing and hemorrhaging started**.**
You’re pathological. You realize that, right? Ernie’s shrimp platter?! You can’t be serious! Do you even see the irony in that?
I know who you are, Nasim. What a beautiful name. It means “breeze” in Farsi. But you weren’t born Nasim. You were born Nasir– “the victorious.” How ironic. But a boy. A perfectly healthy boy.
RED: I assume that you assume the fire was the work of an arsonist. IRS: We did. But we found no evidence of it. All we do know is that the fire started inside the smoke alarm. RED: Hah! How ironic.
If you do that, Harold, they'll take the task force away from you. It'll be the end of what you've built.... Mm. Well, we're not finished just yet, are we? You must admit, though, it's ironic. Us jetting over there to protect your secret, and you refusing to protect mine.
When he is nervous he blabs
So, you went with the gray?
I died once in Marrakech. Two and a half minutes. You wouldn’t believe what I saw on the other side.
When Liz was in a air duct in 2.09: You all right? ... Are you sure? ... Have you ever heard of Bruno Ashmanskis? The most skilled cat burglar I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Bruno mostly did jobs on commission, but he always wanted to do something for himself, something special, so he got it into his head that he was gonna break into the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge to steal an imperial vase from the Qing Dynasty worth millions-- the single biggest trophy of his career.... I never heard from him again. I'd always assumed he'd succeeded, that he was sipping some umbrella-clad cocktail on a beach in Tahiti, until five years later during a remodel of the Fitzwilliam, they removed a wall. There was poor Bruno-- what was left of him, anyway-- stuck inside a heating duct, still clutching that vase. I prefer to think of old Bruno on that beach in Tahiti.
He always answers truthfully when people ask him what does he want or needs, and some of his answers are hilarious:
What do you want? RED: So many things. But right now, I want some information.
What do you need? RED: A bottle of beer and a pork sandwich.
What do you want? RED: Well, another spin of the bottle in Melanie Reichman's basement, but I'll settle for you.
What do you want, Red? RED: A quiet place next to a lovely stream where I can watch things float by someday. But I do have a certain sway with the appropriate German authorities. I can get your shipment released from customs.
What do you want? RED: Ooh, that's a long list. But at the moment, I'll settle for Henry Prescott.
RED: I doubt the Kremlin will be nearly as jejune as I am. RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR: What do you want? RED: That's the spirit, Connie. Service with a smile.
FARZIN: Who are you? How did you get back here? What do you want? - RED: Oh, my. Three questions in not even as many seconds. Which should we answer first?
He an anarchist
Red to the hacker: You’re an anarchist. Did you know Charlie Chaplin was an anarchist? I’ve cultivated a healthy hatred for governments and rules and all the incumbent fetters.
ESTEBAN: You’re an anarchist. RED: Probably. Maybe more of an opportunist.
who recognizes no government as his own:
In what little time I devote to the judgment your government has made about my character and how I treat my fellow man, I can’t help but think about how many of their own citizens they’ve treated like lab rats in the name of science.
Your government is being robbed.
People think it matters who occupies that house. It doesn’t. Multinational corporations and criminals run the world.
A good man could make a real difference as President. A good man might even inspire one’s patriotic instincts, but a good man would never allow himself to be put under obligation to anyone willing to write a big check.
I’m sure you recognize many of the faces behind me. They are among the most powerful men and women on the planet. They are also part of a global conspiracy, a shadow organization that spans across every continent and has for the last three decades, consisting of leaders in world government and the private sector. Some call this group “The Cabal.” The world you live in is the world they want you to think you live in. They start wars, create chaos. And when it suits them, they resolve it.
So, the federal government has armed a cyber terrorist with the digital equivalent of a nuclear warhead. Another fabulous example of your tax dollars at work and yet another reason why I don’t pay taxes.
Has a similar problem with religion.
Honestly, is it just me, or is the human race, armed with religion, poisoned by prejudice, and absolutely frantic with hatred and fear, galloping pell-mell back to the dark ages?
You know what my problem with religion is? Man. Like anything that has a potential to be beautiful, man will turn it into something ugly.
Sees the world as a complicated place, with shifting alliances:
Allies today, enemies tomorrow. The world is a complex place, further complicated by man’s fickle nature
Now, you see, you make it sound like treason. So black and white. It’s not. It’s green. The fact is, American secrets are for sale by an assortment of reputable vendors, myself included. If I don’t do this, someone else will.
Depending on who he is talking to, he changes his perspective, even though it is obvious he loves Moby Dick:
TO THE FBI: I’m Ahab. And if you want the whales on my list, you have to play by my rules.
TO A CRIMINAL: I'm not a big fish, William. I'm Moby Dick.
He is comfortable with chaos, but tries to make his own luck:
For the time being, we'll have to be comfortable with chaos.
I can accept it. Things happen.... I try to leave nothing to fate, but I'm perfectly comfortable with chaos. That's why I trust that whatever happens is probably meant to be.
Our friendship was born of suffering and desperation trust and compassion. It grew in crisis and chaos, matured in curiosity and scholarship.
I’ve always believed luck to be a function of intent– in this case, mine. When these dark clouds were gathering, I took measures to keep Agent Keen safe to ride out the storm.
Of course it would have to be you, because lady luck just adores me that much.
You're right. Luck rarely has anything to do with it.
Sometimes, bad luck is the best luck you'll ever have.
This wasn't an accident. My luck didn't just run out. Someone tipped them. Someone close.
People make their own luck, some more than others. I make a prodigious amount.
